About Porto
Visiting Porto, whether on a long vacation or just on a city-break, you’ll be surprised by everything this old and grey labyrinth has to show you. Endless and winding staircases will lead you to places you’ve never imagined, and a walk through Porto’s alleyways will uncover feelings you’ve never had before, while a small chat with the portuenses (as we are called) will grant you access to centuries of history, unbelievable legends and tradition.
Actually, describing our city as grey it’s somehow false, and overshadows its true essence for sure. When it’s seen from the other side of the Douro River, Porto’s like a magnificent vibrant mosaic, exploding with color and light. A mosaic of different people, ideas, tastes, aromas, and images. A patchwork of majestic granite buildings and flowery plazas.
Although our city has a millennial heritage, calling it “old” is a misconception too. Porto’s like an energetic old friend of ours, with a face marked by the slow course of time, but with a young and wild heart.
Porto is charming, mystical, and so easy to fall in love with. It’s no surprise that it was chosen as the Best European Destination twice in the last 3 years. Situated by the sea, but resting on the shoulders of mountains and valleys, Porto has an impressive urban landscape: its historic centre, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996, is like an open-air museum – not one of monuments and art, but one especially dedicated to people and traditions.
Just enter a bar, a restaurant or a bodega and you’ll experience the portuense way of life: a warm, spirited, generous, with plenty of smiles and loud laughter way of living, all seasoned with the best food and wines one can experience. At the end of the night, we’re sure you will feel a sense of familiarity and authenticity in the people and places you left behind.
But don’t take our word for it, come and see it. Taste and feel this city for yourself.
It will surprise you… we’re really sure of that.
